COURSE OVERVIEW: The Wind Ensemble is the most select performance ensemble
at Lincoln-Way East High School. This very talented group holds specific
instrumentation and a maximum enrollment of approximately 38 musicians.
The Wind Ensemble has a very active performance schedule including local
concerts, Illinois High School Association music contests, and numerous
festivals and competitions throughout the state. Students in this group
are expected to study with a private lesson teacher on their instrument
and participate in the annual Solo/Ensemble contest.

Wind Symphony

COURSE OVERVIEW: The Wind Symphony is the flagship ensemble of the Lincoln-Way
Band Program. It is a highly select organization with controlled instrumentation
that limits enrollment to approximately 70 students. The Wind Symphony
has a very active performance schedule throughout the school year including
regularly scheduled concerts, specialty programs, SICA, IMEA and IHSA
festivals and contests. In addition, members of the Wind Symphony are
expected to perform in the IHSA solo and ensemble contest in March.
All members are eligible to participate in any music extra curricular
activity. Members are expected to practice individually and in extra
rehearsals or sectionals. Private instruction is highly encouraged.
It is strongly recommended that students own their own instruments;
however, specialized school owned instruments may be available with
a rental fee.

Beginning Strings

is advantageous.

with individual attention and assessment.
COURSE OVERVIEW: Beginning Strings is designed to prepare students for
admission into the String Orchestra. The course will take students from
the beginning aspects of string playing, arriving at the courses’
end with a formal understanding of the technical and artistic nuances
of performing violin, viola, cello or bass. A variety of teaching styles
and texts will be used throughout the course. Private instruction, though
not required, is highly recommended. There is a nominal rental charge
for the use of school-owned instruments, if available.
String Orchestra

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT: Elective. Meets the fine arts graduation requirement.
COURSE SEQUENCE: Saturday Strings, Lincoln-Way Beginning Strings program
or previous private instruction.
OTHER PREREQUISITES: Permission of instructor. Private instruction is
highly recommended.
STUDENT AND STAFF ORGANIZATION: Traditional. Group instruction is balanced
with sectionals, individual attention and assessment.
COURSE OVERVIEW: This course offers training in the intermediate and
advanced skills of performing in a string ensemble. Technically challenging
repertoire and solo performance opportunities will be teamed with weekly
audio assessment and individual enrichment assignments. Public performances
will highlight the course as well as IHSA Contest and clinics throughout
the year. There is a nominal rental charge for the use of school-owned
instruments, if available.

Guitar 1

OTHER PREREQUISITES: No previous guitar experience
STUDENT AND STAFF ORGANIZATION: Conventional. Group and individualized
instruction and assessment including both supervised and private practice.
COURSE OVERVIEW: Beginning Guitar is designed to offer basic, but intensive,
training in the playing of the standard six-string acoustic guitar.
The student will learn to read music notation, perform basic chord progressions,
and play exercises and short pieces alone and in ensembles. Listening
to guitar music and discussing the guitar’s role in music of the
past and present are also components of the course. Although all types
of music will be heard and played, this course is not a “rock
and roll” guitar class. Students will discover, however, that
the universal musical concepts they learn apply to popular styles as
well. This class is not for the student that has studied guitar previously.

COURSE SEQUENCE: Successful completion of Beginning Guitar I with a
grade of C or better.
OTHER PREREQUISITES: Consent of instructor.
STUDENT AND STAFF ORGANIZATION: Students must own their own nylon string
classical guitar, (guitar must be approved by the instructor; guitars
may be purchased through the music department).
COURSE OVERVIEW: Guitar II is a continuation of Beginning Guitar 1.
Skills learned in Beginning Guitar 1 will be amplified with intense
training in both classical and commercial technique. Instruction will
be given through the venues of traditional textbook, ensemble arrangements,
solo opportunities, and student compositions. Students will continue
learning classical style in both solo and small ensemble work with the
goal of performing a grade 2 1/2 - 3 solo at the end of the course.
In addition to classical training, commercial/jazz technique and performance
will be studied and applied. Music theory and arranging will be an essential
aspect of the course with all students composing a small ensemble work
during the semester.

Studio
Members of this class are eligible to audition for and participate in
music department extracurricular activities.

own nylon-stringed classical guitar to participate. Members of this
class are eligible to audition for and participate in music department

with individual attention and assessment.
COURSE OVERVIEW: The Chorale is the flagship ensemble of the Lincoln-Way
Central Choral Music Program. and is dedicated to performing the finest
literature for mixed voices. The curriculum is designed to increase
musical skills and abilities to an advanced level. Members will find
themselves challenged by the level of difficulty of music, rudiments
of music theory, and concepts of singing that are covered. The Chorale
has a very active performance schedule throughout the school year including
scheduled concerts, special programs, and SICA, IMEA, and IHSA festivals.
Members of the Chorale are encouraged to take private vocal lessons
and to participate in the IHSA Solo and Ensemble contest in March. Members
are expected to practice individually outside of class. Members are
eligible to participate in any non-auditioned musical activity. Membership
in the Chorale makes students eligible to audition for the Lincoln-Way
Central Madrigal Singers and Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Members of the Chorale
will participate in the annual SIAM Music Booster Discount Card sale.

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course is designed for students with little or
no music performance experience. Activities and instruction will explore
the nature of music and major musical style periods. Students will be
able to (1) listen to, analyze, and use a music vocabulary, discuss
music of a wide variety of styles and periods including modern music;
(2) understand the elements of music including melody, rhythm, harmony,
form, and texture; and (3) analyze and evaluate new musical listening
experiences based on critical listening skills. The course, if combined
with one semester of Electronic Music, Music Technology, or Beginning
Guitar (with their added emphasis on music notation and performance),
will provide the student with a broad fundamental basis for further
music study and/or the ability to make music an understood and appreciated
part of life.

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course offers students the opportunity to explore
their original musical ideas in an environment rich in computer and
music technology resources. Students will learn how to use the computer
to interface with state of the art electronic musical instruments. They
will be able to access thousands of sounds ranging from ancient flutes
and lutes, to traditional pianos and horns, to contemporary guitars
and drums, to exotic sitars and tablas, and on to futuristic synthesizers
and sound effects. Whether creating original approaches to existing
music or composing brand new music, students will learn and apply critical
skills in planning, problem solving, and decision making. Working independently
or in collaborative teams, they will learn to use the computer as a
creative partner accessing its power to bring their imagination to life.

and is designed to give students a higher level of instruction in the
world of MIDI technology and its applications in the current musical
fields. Students will endeavor to produce work on a more professional
level. Working independently or in collaborative teams, they will continue
to use the computer as a creative partner accessing its power to bring
their musical imagination to life.

COURSE OVERVIEW: Music Technology 3 is a continuation of Music Technology
1 and 2 with an emphasis on independent projects. Students enrolled
in Music Technology 3 will compose and arrange music for classroom use
as well as possible use with other disciplines, i.e., Art, Business,
Dance. Students will learn sound sampling and the art of placing sounds
of their environment into artistic endeavors. Weekly listening of computer-generated
music will assist in bridging current musical knowledge with new state
of the art techniques. Advanced students will have the opportunity to
combine music technology and video during the semester.
Individualized Music

COURSE SEQUENCE: This course fulfills the Music requirement for the
student with special needs.

STUDENT AND STAFF ORGANIZATION: Conventional. Emphasis on individualized
instruction.
COURSE OVERVIEW: Individualized Music is designed to provide music experiences
for the student with special needs in a classroom situation which allows
for a high degree of individualized instruction. Students will receive
exposure to a wide variety of two-dimensional and three-dimensional
experiences. Students will have the opportunity to develop and improve
fine motor skills, problem-solving techniques, auditory, and tactile
awareness, and communicative and expressive abilities, as well as experiencing
a learning situation with a high degree of creative success.
