Bert A. Johnson is Chair of the Music Department at Lincoln-Way East High School. While overseeing the department, he also conducts the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and Jazz ensembles. He teaches courses in Piano and Music Technology and is the director for the Marching Griffins.

Professionally, Mr. Johnson was a member of Disney’s legendary Futurecorps in Orlando, FL, and The Disney College All-American Show Band in Anaheim, CA. His drum corps experience includes one season with Southwind and two seasons with the Santa Clara Vanguard. He has studied privately with Charles Daval, Arnold Jacobs, Malcolm McNab, Rick Baptist and Vinnie Dimartino. He has been a soloist for the Auburn University and University of Michigan Concert and Marching Bands.

 

Mr. Johnson holds a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Michigan with a minor in Music Theory, Literature and Trumpet Pedagogy. During his tenure at Michigan he was principal trumpet in the Symphony Band under the direction of H. Robert Reynolds and lead trumpet in the University of Michigan’s premier jazz ensemble. He was also principal trumpet on the university productions of West Side Story and Guys and Dolls. Mr. Johnson was a staff member for three seasons with the Michigan Marching Band during which he consulted and designed halftime and post season bowl performances.
Over the past eight years, Mr. Johnson has spent the summers teaching with various high school bands including Lincoln-Way in 1998. In his spare time, he freelances and teaches private lessons and he will be continuing his graduate education this year. He is married to Ms. Erika K. Johnson.
