Curricular Choir Audition Process
Who has to audition and what is the audition for?
If you want to enroll in Treble Choir or Men’s Choir, then you do not have to audition. Otherwise, you will go through the audition for placement in Concert Choir or Chorale. INCOMING FRESHMEN DO NOT NEED TO AUDITION. THEY SHOULD ENROLL IN TREBLE CHOIR OR MEN'S CHOIR
Who is judging the audition?
The audition panel will consist of four anonymous music educators. You will be recorded by a student helper and the recordings will be sent to the judges electronically.
How do auditions work?
Sign up for an audition time. Arrive to the choir room area approximately 15 minutes prior to your audition.
What do I do for the audition?
Ahead of time: Record your "America" on your phone and email to Mr. Granger at firstname.lastname@example.org. If the file is too big, please email it to him at email@example.com. This needs to be done before your audition date.
Day of audition:
You will sing “My Country ‘tis of Thee” lower harmony. Please sing the harmony with a tone that will match the recorded voice. For a practice track to sing with, see below.
Sight reading: You will have 10 seconds to look at a rhythm that can include any of the following: syncopation, rests, and any note value from whole note to sixteenth note. You will only be evaluated on the clapping of the rhythm. If you wish to count or subdivide aloud, the judges will be instructed to ignore it. You will then do the same on a pitch based sight reading.
How do I apply to be a section leader?
To be considered for a section leader in Concert Choir or Chorale, you will have to fill out an application, complete an interview with Mr. Granger, and pass a piano proficiency. A more detailed explanation and schedule will be distributed after the choir selection is complete. Madrigal section leaders and pitch pipers will also be determined in this interview
How large will each choir be next year?
Chorale is determined by the appropriate number of men and women in proportion who have shown excellent skills in all areas of the audition. Concert Choir will then be determined from the women who have shown advanced skills on their audition. Neither group has a minimum or maximum number of students
