Choir Auditions (22/23 Placement)

Q: Who has to audition and what is the audition for?
A: If you want to enroll in the entry-level choir, then you do not have to audition. If you want to stay in the choir you are currently enrolled in, you do not have to audition. Otherwise, you will audition for placement in an advanced choir. Incoming freshmen cannot audition; they should enroll in the entry-level choir.

Q: When are auditions?
A: Auditions will occur in class on Thursday, February 24th & Friday, February 25th. If students are not enrolled in a choir class, they should email hsamawi@lw210.org or send Ms. Samawi a Teams Chat to schedule an audition time. If a student is in quarantine or currently on the Acellus program, they CAN audition virtually!

Q: What will I have to do for the audition?
A: For the first part of the audition, you will sing “America the Beautiful” in the key provided.

For the second part of the audition, you will have 20 seconds to look at a sight-reading exercise. You may choose to use solfege or sing on a neutral syllable (ex. “la” “doo”). You will be given a key to the tonic chord and then starting pitch.  No tempo will be set, but keep a steady beat. Points are given per measure based on pitch and rhythm.  Please note: sight reading is weighted far less than the other component of the audition. ALL sight reading experience levels are welcome!

Q: Who is judging the audition?
A: The audition panel will consist of anonymous judges. Your audition will be recorded and sent virtually for judging this year. Your scores then place you into an advanced choir.

Q: How do I apply to be a section leader?
A: To be considered for a section leader position, you will have to fill out an application, complete an interview with Ms. Samawi, and pass a piano proficiency test.  A more detailed explanation and schedule will be distributed after the choir selection is complete.

Q: How large will each choir be next year?
A:  There will be 3-4 choirs. An advanced mixed ensemble is determined by the appropriate number of sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses in proportion who have shown excellent skills in all areas of the audition and have demonstrated excellent work ethic and attitude in the year previous. An advanced treble ensemble is determined from the sopranos and altos who have shown advanced skills on their audition and have demonstrated excellent work ethic and attitude in the year previous. None of the groups have a minimum or maximum number of students.
