The Lincoln-Way Orchestra Program
Lincoln-Way #210 currently has orchestra class at East, Central, and West. All the orchestras meet during the school day, and hold supplemental evening rehearsals in preparation for performances. Each year students will perform at a university orchestra festival and have the opportunity to attend professional performances in the Chicagoland area.
You do not have to audition to be placed in an orchestra – everyone in invited and encouraged to perform!
Students in their 3rd and 4th year of participation in the high school orchestra at L-W receive honors credit towards their GPA.
The orchestras at Lincoln-Way perform music written for both string and full orchestra, spanning almost five hundred years! The orchestras concertize at least once a grading period, and receive academic grades based on participation, concert reviews, music theory, and performance. In addition to formal concerts, members of the Lincoln-Way Orchestras lend their talents to the annual Madrigal Dinners, Spring Musicals, and Jazz Program. Orchestra members may participate in the annual Lincoln-Way Solo/Ensemble Contest and audition to be part of the ILMEA District and All-State Orchestras.
Multiple chamber music opportunities are also available. Student-led chamber ensembles have opportunities to perform for school functions, fundraisers, and galas.
Members of the L-W Orchestra are given the opportunity to work with guest artists throughout the year, expanding their exposure to the orchestral world here in the Chicagoland area. Recent guests include conductor David Danzmayr of the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor Allen Tinkham from the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, Dr. Robert Hasty from Northwestern University, violinist Blair Milton from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and violinist/violist Carl Johnson from the Chicago Sinfonietta.
The Lincoln-Way Orchestra Program travels biannually for musical enrichment opportunities. The orchestra has toured and concertized in New York City (2001 and 2009), Chicago (2003), England (2005), Toronto (2007), Boston (2011), San Francisco (2013), Nashville (2015), Disney World (2017), and Boston (2019). We hope you can join us in the future!
When you get to Lincoln-Way, we’d love to have you be a part of the orchestral music program. We can’t wait to have you join this wonderful community of fun people, fun music, and wonderful experiences.
